Breeding like rabbits

If I knew then what I know now there is no way I would have children. You may have already read this, but I also think there are too many people in the world. And too many children don’t have homes at all. In this I salute Madonna in adopting a child. We can only help each other one at a time after all…

The population of the planet has doubled in my lifetime. The world simply cannot sustain growth at this rate. So why is no one talking about this?

Politicians don’t talk about it. It’s even a difficult one to talk about with friends! Restricting family size, it seems, is a taboo subject. Remember the furore when China began their one child only policy? It’s an erosion of human rights after all. But what about the right to live in a world worth living in?

The Human Rights Act 1998, Schedule 1, Article 12 says that: ‘Men and women of marriageable age have the right to marry and to found a family…’ Quite right too. But no guidance is given on how many should make up that family. Perhaps a first child is an acceptable reproductive adventure. A second child is a bit more daft as you now know what having a child is actually like – and I don’t mean ‘having’ as physical birth-giving, because that’s actually the easiest bit – I’m talking about that responsibility stuff. You could, however, argue that having two children is acceptable as it’s one to replace him and one to replace her. Fair enough. No net gain. But a third child is perhaps a careless, selfish folly. Having four or more is seriously offensive and grossly antisocial.

I believe there needs to be a serious global debate on how we can reduce the world’s population and persuade people from every continent and of every faith – with real policies, carrots and sticks – to have fewer children. Someone let me loose on that idiot the pope for a start…
