Pic of the Green Man on Eynsham church from the BBC website
I was interested to see this article about the Green Man on the BBC website. I blogged about the Green Man last year. It seems that this pre-christian figure of leafy fertility turns up on churches all over the place. There’s a nice gallery here showing lots of examples of him on churches throughout Oxfordshire. So what is it about this character that makes him able to sit so comfortably on christian temples? What were the stonemasons doing? Does it hark back to the times when christians had not manage to banish local gods from ordinary people’s minds?
