Hummingbird Hawk Moth

Another awesome photo by Steven Round.
Apart from the man called Moth that I was so fortunate to marry, today I fell in love with another moth. Specifically Macroglossum stellatarum, the Hummingbird Hawk Moth. My dad and I were pottering about in the garden admiring a sage in full bloom and suddenly Dad spotted this unusual and beautiful creature.

We hardly recognised it as a moth as first, so odd was it to see it in the daytime. And it behaved exactly like a hummingbird. What a joy and a privilege it was to see it! Isn’t biodiversity thrilling?
