Saturday night lakeside

14 Jul 2007 / in fishing

Some people like to party on a Saturday night, but for me and my son Rupert an evening by Surman Lake in west Oxfordshire hoping to hook a carp is excitement enough.

After two hours, we’d only netted a 1lb bream and a small roach, and we were thinking about leaving. We’ll just have another 20 minutes, we thought. And then – woooo! – the reel screamed, and Rupert knew he’d hooked something magnificent. He’s never happier than when playing a fish.

It fought hard… for 20 minutes!

After some time, we finally saw the fish.

We landed it – a glorious mirror carp…

…which Rupert carefully unhooked…

and weighed. 9lbs, 8oz! Rupert’s personal best carp!

The colours on its fins and tail were golden like the sky.

He was delighted and kissed his carp…

…before gently returning it to the lake to fight another day.

What a wonderful evening!
