Shot out of the sky

02 May 2007 / in going off on one, natural world
Thousands of mean-spirited, blood-thirsty uncaring people in Malta like to shoot migrating birds for pleasure in springtime. Malta now stands accused of violating the EU Birds Directive so hopefully this is the last year that these few twisted bastards will be able to blast our feathered friends (including many rare species) out of the sky for a bit of a giggle.

I hope (but doubt) that Malta’s exemption from EU law allowing it to trap finches will also be revisited. On what grounds are they exempt? That stupid ‘tradition’ argument again?

In any case, I will not be going to Malta until such time as it changes its laws in favour of the birds. There’s more good stuff about protecting Maltese birds here.

On a lighter note, on Tuesday I noticed the swifts had returned from Africa to skies over our village. Seeing them again made me very, very happy.

This is a demo store for testing purposes — no orders shall be fulfilled.
