Close encounters of a springbok kind

12 Apr 2007 / in natural world, travels

Our trip to southern Africa earlier this year is never far from my mind. I’m reminded of little incidents all the time… like when we’d just set up camp at Steenbokkie private nature reserve near Beaufort West after a hard day’s driving through South Africa. I thought I’d get my paints out and sketch the sun setting behind the mountains.

To my amazement, a young springbok approached! I sat still expecting it to move cautiously towards me. But it was fearless and obviously used to human company. It made a beeline for my paintbox and I had trouble pushing it away, especially as it had little horns developing and wasn’t afraid to use them!
